Opening of the Intercare Medical Centre and Day Hospital, Century City

Cape Town’s thriving Century City now has its own state of the art medical centre and day hospital.  With the opening of this modern facility on 7 July 2015, Intercare once again takes the lead in innovative healthcare.

The medical centre incorporates two very established and respected GP practices from the Century City area, offering a variety of medical services.  Intercare has equipped the Medical Centre with a high-tech mammography unit in collaboration with a prominent radiology practice. This innovative and unprecedented step is based on the increasing burden of breast cancer in South Africa’s female population. The Medical Centre also has a Centre for Lifestyle Management, a Dis-Chem pharmacy, and a whole host of health disciplines such as pathology for blood tests, biokineticists, dieticians, and physiotherapists.

In line with the latest international thinking, Intercare has integrated its healthcare services and designed its primary care around patients with similar needs. These three groups of patients are: healthy people; healthy people with a significant event affecting their health; and people with one or more chronic conditions.

As a healthy person, you’ll be able to come into the Intercare Centre for Lifestyle Management for things like breast cancer screenings, and blood pressure and cholesterol tests. As Intercare is the largest provider of Discovery Vitality Wellness Centres in the country, you can now complete almost the full spectrum of Vitality assessments under one roof – whether it’s on an individual basis or as part of a broader corporate wellness offering. The Intercare Medical Centre is also open 7 days a week (including public holidays), and for longer hours, so no matter how busy you are, you’ll have access to high quality and affordable health care services - from wellness management and routine care to urgent and chronic care.

Intercare’s Day Hospital, Century City will be home to leading specialists in hand surgery, orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, ENT, general surgery, gastroenterology, urology, ophthalmology, gynaecology, maxillofacial surgery and dentistry. Many of these specialists will consult at the facility. The hospital has 3 operating theatres, a procedure room and 24 beds.

If you’re normally a healthy person but have a significant event or condition which affects your health and you need something like hand surgery, or your tonsils removed, this is where the day hospital can assist. While it’s all high-tech, the day hospital has been designed to be warm, family-friendly, and inviting. It’s not an intimidating place like most hospitals, even for children. The day hospital is not only accessible, but it’s safer because there’s a greatly reduced risk of hospital-acquired infections. It’s also cost effective, with international studies demonstrating that procedures done in day hospitals are 26 to 40% cheaper than the acute counter-parts.
