Periodontal disease

Periodontal disease (periodontitis) is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss and thus has a negative impact on a person chewing function, aesthetic appearance and quality of life. Bacteria responsible for periodontitis can enter your bloodstream through your gum tissue, affecting your lungs, heart, joints and other parts of your body.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Swollen gums
  • Bright red or purplish gums
  • Gums that feel tender when touched
  • Gums that pull away from your teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth

Proper oral hygiene and getting regular dental checkups can greatly reduce your chance of developing periodontitis.

Teeth Whitening

With time our teeth get darker, partly because of age but also as a result of lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking strong coffee and red wine. Teeth may also darken as a result of some antibiotics. ‘Calculus' or tartar can also affect the colour of your teeth.

A dentist will assess you first to see whether teeth whitening is suitable for you and if so, explain the options which will be the most suitable for you.
